City Rescue Mission – New Castle, PA

This year, Home Energy Consultants and staff members at the Cranberry Township, PA office, in particular, spent their Day of Service at the City Rescue Mission in New Castle, PA. The City Rescue Mission is the only emergency homeless shelter available in Lawrence County. They provide shelter to the homeless during periods of inclement weather. The Mission also provides a voluntary 1+ year recovery center for addicts who seek a new path; a job search and skills assistance center; a classroom that teaches multiple life s kills classes each day; a soup kitchen and food pantry; a women’s shelter; a children’s recreation center; low income clinics; and counseling services. It is funded completely through grants and donations and does not rely on government funding.

IGS employees join in on the work for a day

To help out at the Mission, the Cranberry team purchased and prepared a delicious pasta meal with meatballs and a fresh salad that served 75 people who were either participating in the recovery program or were staying in the shelter and in need of a meal. Three groups of volunteers spent the day painting in the Mission’s recreation hall. The hall is used for several children’s activities - sports, and even archery lessons – and was in need of a fresh coat of paint. IGS employees
The team members working in the kitchen had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with Keith – a worker who lives in the shelter – who shared the importance of the Mission to their community. Not just a place to sleep, but a place to gain traction and provide assistance toward a new life path. More than just a meal and a bed – the Mission offers true compassion to those who walk through its doors.
