Boots on the Ground with GRID Alternatives

Warm climates, hard work, and many rewarding experiences.
Since 2016, IGS Energy employees have joined forces with GRID Alternatives on 12 international trips, installing solar power across Mexico and Nicaragua as part of our Renewable Energy Corps. Dozens of IGS-ers have travelled off the beaten path to large cities and rural communities for week-long experiences that include training and education, cultural immersion, and a start-to-finish solar installation.
“It’s probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but also one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done,” said Jena Albers, IT product manager, on her 2023 trip to Ometepe Island, Nicaragua, where she and her colleagues installed an off-grid solar system for a women-owned eco hostel.
Expanding equitable access to solar
GRID Alternatives is a nonprofit organization that aims to build community-powered solutions to advance economic and environmental justice through renewable energy. Internationally, the organization helps off-grid communities in Nicaragua, Nepal, and Mexico gain access to renewable energy and job training.
Since 2004, GRID has served more than 33,000 households and installed nearly 100 MW of solar — the lifetime equivalent of $750 million in savings for these communities. And they've helped tens of thousands of people receive solar education through their workforce training programs. Funding from IGS Energy’s Clean Energy for Everyone grant program supports this work.
“We’ve always had a focus on workforce development,” said Director of International Programs Jenean Smith. “Our model was always about getting people who want to learn up on the roof through our training program. We’ve seen the need over and over, both for solar energy and job training, and we’ve been able to make a deep impact.”
A partnership for positive change
Our international trip participants shared that contributing to GRID's impact was a positive experience. “Being on the ground, seeing the relationship that GRID built with the (hostel) owner over the years, and then getting to play a small part in the journey toward sustainability was really cool,” Albers said.
Here’s what some others shared about their time spent on a GRID solar installation:
“Establishing relationships with people that I didn’t know before the trip was great. And being able to see another part of the world was incredible as well.” — Alex Haas, residential sales optimization specialist.
“On the trip, we came into contact with so many wonderful people, both on the project and during other parts of the trip. I will forever be watching the news and cheering for the people of Nicaragua — I now feel a connection to this part of the world.” — Norman Hall, senior HR business partner
“I would encourage anyone interested in participating in the Corps to seize the opportunity. You'll be part of a project that truly makes a difference, both in the community and in your own understanding of renewable energy. The hands-on learning experience is invaluable and can help you build practical skills. You’ll have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of people, which fosters collaboration and lasting connections. The shared experience enhances personal and professional growth. It's a chance to challenge yourself, expand your perspective, and contribute to a meaningful cause.” — Diane Kwon, lead, C&I sales
