Unilever, a transnational consumer goods company, whose products are sold in 190 countries worldwide, formalized a plan in 2015 to become carbon positive (eliminate use of fossil fuels) by 2030. This plan encompassed everything from manufacturing to operations.
To help reach their goal, Unilever partnered with IGS Solar to install a solar array at their newly-renovated North American headquarters. The array, which is owned and operated by IGS, is designed to generate over 500,000 kWh of electricity per year.
Sized at approximately 400kW, it is large enough to supply a portion of the electricity consumption for the building. According to EPA's calculations, the electricity generated will reduce the equivalent amount of CO2 produced by burning more than 400,000 pounds of coal annually.
