Simple Things you can do to take care of the Earth

The news is filled with stories about how our planet is deteriorating. It can get overwhelming (and expensive) trying to keep up with all the ways you can reduce your impact on the earth. But, if each of us took just a few simple steps to take care of our world, the effects would be significant. Earth Day 2017 is on Saturday, April 22. And while volunteering with earth-supporting organizations is an easy way to make your impact, it’s not always possible. Lucky for you, we’ve come up with a few simple ideas for you to support earth-saving initiatives and reduce your footprint!

    1. Drink fair trade coffee.

On Earth Day, switch out your daily cup of coffee for a cup of Fair Trade coffee. While you may not taste a difference, fair trade products help to improve the lives of those who grow and sell their goods, and protect the environment, all while receiving a truly quality product.

    2. Reduce how much water you waste.

Whether you’re taking a shower, brushing your teeth, running the dishwasher, or turning on your sprinkler to water your grass, take a few moments to reflect on how much water you are wasting. The United Nations Inter-Agency Mechanism on All Freshwater-Related Issues, Including Sanitation – a.k.a. UN Water – have targeted 2030 as the year everyone has access to safe water. The 2017 World Water Development Report shows that improved wastewater management is as much about reducing pollution at the source as removing contaminants from wastewater flows, reusing reclaimed water, and recovering useful by-products. However, creating less wastewater reduces the amount of contaminated wastewater that plagues our worldwide water supply.

    3. Like IGS on Facebook…and we’ll plant a tree!

Yes – you read that right. For the past two years, IGS Energy has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant over 7,500 trees in the U.S. This year, for every new ‘Like’ we receive on our Facebook page between Tuesday, April 18, and Friday, April 21, we will plant a tree. This year’s batch of trees will be planted in the Harrison State Forest in Harrison County, Ohio. Trees are essential to a healthy world, as they create the air we breathe, filter air pollution by reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, and even cool the earth by creating shade and absorbing those greenhouse gases from the air.
